Intermittent fasting: benefits for body and soul

In many cultures, fasting is a spiritual tool to release yourself from stress and distractions, to calm down and find your center. Fasting creates space for mindfulness, reflection and silence.
Fasting pauses the digestive process, which helps some people focus more consciously on other things – physical, mental and emotional. Intermittent fasting brings moments of clarity. When the constant intake of food is eliminated, we notice how often we eat out of habit, boredom, or emotional hunger. This realization can be a key to greater awareness and inner peace.
But intermittent fasting also has many positive effects on the body:

  • Regularly abstaining from food can relieve the strain on the cardiovascular system and provide a stable basis for your well-being.
  • Many people use this diet to eat more consciously and lose weight. Since the diet is changed permanently, a yo-yo effect is not so easy.
  • Some people report that intermittent fasting makes them more aware of their sleep patterns and feels more balanced.
So it’s worth taking a closer look at the topic of intermittent fasting for many people.

This is how intermittent fasting works

With intermittent fasting, fasting phases and eating times alternate. Depending on your lifestyle, goals and preferences, you can try different forms of intermittent fasting.
The 16-8 method is particularly well-known and simple. With this variant, you only eat 8 hours a day, for example between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Fast for the remaining 16 hours. Fasting in this context means that you do not eat anything and only drink calorie-free drinks. Water and unsweetened tea are allowed at any time.
But there are other forms of intermittent fasting that have similar positive effects:

  • With the 5:2 method, you can eat normally five days a week and reduce your calorie intake to a minimum on the other two. This form of intermittent fasting does not involve abstaining from food completely.
  • The more intensive form is “Alternate Day Fasting (ADF)”, in which you alternately eat normally one day and one day with reduced calories.
  • With the One Meal a Day (OMAD) method, you eat one large meal per day and fast the rest of the time.
  • With “Eat-Stop-Eat” you fast for a whole day once or twice a week.

Fasting as a ritual of mindfulness

You can use fasting as a conscious act of self-care. Combine fasting with rituals that support your inner contemplation:

  • Use the morning fasting time for meditation, breathing exercises or quiet reflection, for example!
  • Write down how you feel while fasting! Are there recurring patterns or insights that you can use for yourself?
  • Use the time you have gained in the evening for a new gratitude practice! Consciously thank your body for its abilities!
  • Gentle exercise, such as yoga or nature walks, can help you deepen your connection with yourself.
