A prostate check-up is a simple measure with a big impact. It can help detect potential changes at an early stage, even before symptoms appear.
Still, many men postpone this appointment – whether out of uncertainty, fear, or because they don’t think it’s important. We want to encourage you to take regular prostate examinations seriously. Here’s why.

When Is a Prostate Examination Useful?
The German Society of Urology recommends an annual prostate cancer screening for men starting at age 45. If the family risk of developing prostate cancer is higher, an earlier start can be sensible. This is the case, for example, if a father or brother had prostate cancer.
These preventive check-ups are especially important for two reasons:
- Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men in Germany. According to the Robert Koch Institute, between 65,000 and 70,000 men are diagnosed with this cancer each year. The risk increases with age.
- Prostate cancer often causes no noticeable symptoms for a long time. That’s why preventive examinations are crucial for early detection.
What Happens During a Prostate Examination?
Many men imagine prostate cancer screening to be very uncomfortable or even painful. In reality, it’s a short and straightforward medical routine. Typically, the examination involves the following steps:
- Medical history (anamnesis): The doctor asks about possible symptoms, family history, and general risk factors.
- Rectal examination: The prostate is palpated through the rectal wall. This only takes about 10 seconds and is not a big deal. It may feel a little uncomfortable but is not painful. It is important to identify possible changes at an early stage.
- Additional methods: Depending on age, medical history, or personal preference, further methods may be used, such as ultrasound or determining the PSA level in the blood.
Good to know: Regular screenings are usually covered by statutory health insurance.
The PSA Test as an Additional Option in Prostate Screening
The so-called PSA test measures the concentration of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. This protein is produced by the prostate. Elevated levels may indicate changes – but not always. Sometimes the PSA result is a false positive, which can be alarming at first. Nevertheless, PSA levels can be an important component of screening and early detection.
Whether the PSA test is advisable depends on various individual factors such as age and family history. Seek medical advice to make a well-informed decision!
A Conscious Lifestyle for a Relaxed Life
Healthy lifestyle choices can also support prostate health. These include a balanced diet, regular physical activity, sufficient fluid intake, and good stress management. In addition, you should avoid excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption.
And if you also attend regular check-ups, you are already making an important contribution to a long and fulfilling life.
