Movement is as natural as breathing or eating. Our bodies are designed to stay active – yet in modern everyday life, physical activity often falls short.
Day by day, our bodies carry us through challenges, helping us achieve small and big goals. To keep this possible in the long run, regular exercise is essential. Physical activity makes us feel more awake, energetic, and present, while also lowering the risk of various health issues.
So, why exactly is exercise so important? Here are some of the key reasons to stay active:

Exercise challenges and strengthens the body
Regular movement has a positive impact on the entire body and its abilities. Muscles, the cardiovascular system, and other structures adapt to what we ask of them. By keeping your body active through exercise, you typically remain stronger, more flexible, and more energetic – which is also reflected in your overall well-being.
Exercise increases the chance of a healthier life
The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that regular activity brings many health benefits – especially for the heart, circulation, and metabolism.
In medicine, exercise is also widely recommended as supportive care, for example in relation to bones, back, or respiratory health.
Exercise improves body awareness
What can your body do, and where are its limits? The better you understand this, the less likely you are to get injured in everyday life. A strong sense of body awareness also makes you feel safer, more confident, and more comfortable.
Exercise helps sharpen this awareness and improves coordination skills. Through practice, you learn to understand yourself better while gently expanding your own boundaries.
Exercise as a balance for stress
Physical activity not only strengthens the body but also helps relieve stress and promote relaxation.
Many people report that exercise helps them unwind and feel better. Endurance activities such as running, cycling, or Nordic walking are particularly effective for releasing tension and boosting well-being. Why not give it a try?
How much activity does the body need?
According to the WHO, adults between 18 and 64 should engage in 150–300 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity per week. A brisk walk already counts toward this goal.
The more intense the exercise, the less time is required – for vigorous activity, 75–150 minutes per week are sufficient. In addition, the WHO recommends strength training at least twice a week, covering all major muscle groups.
From the age of 65, the focus should increasingly shift to coordination, muscle strength, and balance, with at least three dedicated sessions per week.
