How old we get and whether we age healthily depends less on our genes than on our lifestyle. Until recently, scientists assumed that genes could account for up to 30% of life expectancy. However, a large study based on an analysis of 400 million pieces of data confirms that genes are only responsible for around seven percent of our lifespan. This means that we ourselves can do a lot to prevent lifestyle diseases such as diabetes.
How does diabetes mellitus develop?
A basic distinction is made between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease and often occurs at a young age. In contrast, more than 90 percent of people suffer from type 2 diabetes, formerly known as adult-onset diabetes.
When our body absorbs sugar, the insulin in the pancreas signals the cells to absorb this sugar to produce energy. While too little insulin is produced in type 1 diabetes, the cells in type 2 diabetes are resistant to insulin. This means that the cells no longer respond to insulin and the sugar in the blood can no longer be channeled into the cells. The blood sugar level rises.
To compensate for this, the pancreas produces more and more insulin. However, this production is eventually no longer sufficient. Because the body’s cells become increasingly resistant to insulin due to the high production, a long and high rise in blood sugar occurs after the corresponding sugar intake. This eventually leads to type 2 diabetes.
If the cells of the pancreas have to produce large amounts of insulin over a period of years, they will eventually become exhausted. The cells die. Eventually, they produce less and less insulin and the person affected has to inject themselves with insulin.
How can diabetes be prevented? Type 2 diabetes is caused by too much sugar intake. However, you can do a lot with exercise, diet and lifestyle changes:
- Lack of sleep and stress: According to studies, stress hormones and lack of sleep cause blood sugar levels to rise. Plan enough breaks and downtime for yourself and try to always go to bed at the same time!
- Exercise: If you exercise for around 30 minutes a day, you can prevent diabetes. Every step counts. Stand up when you’re on the phone in the office, climb stairs instead of taking the elevator or leave the car at home more often and walk or cycle!
- Diet: Reduce white flour and sugar and only consume alcohol in moderation! A balanced diet with fresh vegetables, wholegrain products, nuts, seeds and healthy oils, as well as fish and lean meat can help you to prevent diabetes.
How can dietary supplements and phytopreparations help?
