Pectins belong to the group of so-called polysaccharides, i.e. polysaccharides. Unlike polysaccharides, however, pectins are not digested but pass directly into the large intestine like dietary fiber, where they serve as food for beneficial intestinal bacteria, promote detoxification processes, and can lower cholesterol levels.

The pectins in AMCP (Aeskulap Modified Citrus Pectin) are obtained from citrus fruits.

Aeskulap Modified Citrus Pectin contains the following ingredients:
a) fractionated, heat- and pH-modified pectin
b) complex polysaccharides
c) various galactose residues, in particular β-galactose

AMCP is rich in galactose residues, especially β-galactose, which are known for their high affinity in certain cell types. The galactose-containing carbohydrate side chains of AMCP can mimic or compete with natural ligands of the binding protein galectin-3.
